Capi Wins California Cup

Capitola, CA - Local Jack Russell Terrier, Capitola of River-Joy or 'Capi' and his handler/trainer, Sandi Pensinger, captured the prestigious California Cup at the Bay Team agility trial. Capi made 6 faultless agility runs to win the award.

250 dogs of all breeds competed with Capi at the Bay Team event over the July 19-20, 2003 weekend. The California Cup is hosted annually by the Bay Team agility club. The Cup is awarded to one large, one medium and one small dog for each division. The agility trial was held on Mare Island in the Bay Area.

Capi is a 4 year old, 12 inch tall Jack Russell Terrier. Capi has been training and competing in agility for 3 years. Capi and his handler, Sandi Pensinger, train in San Jose at Power Paws Agility with international champion, Nancy Geyes and her husband, Jim Basic. They also train locally with Dee Hutton at Primrose Agility in Watsonville. Sandi and Capi train daily in their backyard in Capitola. Capi has also holds a Most Versatile Terrier title. Besides doing agility he is a conformation and racing champion, competes in go-to-ground and obedience events, he holds a Canine Good Citizen title and is a therapy dog. Capi has a lot of fun in agility, and he loves to swim and play Frisbee. In fact he has his own pint-sized swimming pool. Capi's best agility buddy is Tempe Wick, Sandi's up-and-coming female Jack Russell Terrier.

Capi's handler and owner, Sandi Pensinger, is active in Capitola Dog Owners Group and helps organize the Spring Canine Parade and the Howl-o-ween Canine Masquerade. She is also active in Jack Russell Terrier Genetic Research and the SMART Agility club.

About a million dogs are currently training and competing in agility in the US. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Canine agility is timed obstacle course with jumps, tunnels, teeter totters and a slalom of weave poles where the handler sprints alongside directing the dog to take the next obstacle in a sequence. Exciting to watch, the competitions are increasingly televised. Spectators may attend the SMART agility trial to be held on August 23-24 in Manzanita Park in Prunedale to see agility first hand. Local clubs that hold trials in the Monterey Bay area are SMART, Peninsula Australian Shepherd Association, Monterey Bay Dog Training Club and The Bay Team.
